Danny and I have been planning to go travelling since January 2017. We had been putting money away but didn’t plan where we wanted to go, or what we were going to do. We had some places in Europe that we wanted to visit in our heads, as we both thought it would be a good place to start. We wasn’t really planning anything for definite though, at one point we were just going to wing it all.
Since then we have decided to change our minds and start in Southeast Asia. Danny came to me with this idea as he had done some research and found out it was a lot cheaper and it was a totally different to what we are used to in Europe. We also said it was probably best to actually plan what we want to see and do in each country as neither of us has been there before.
The first thing Danny and I did was look at flights to Bangkok, Thailand to see how much a one-way ticket was. We then decided to contact a travel agency called STA Travel to see if they could help us in any way. Danny was back and forth emailing them until they found us the best flights possible to get to Thailand. We then also booked our flight from Bali back home to the UK for 6 months later.
When we first started planning it was very stressful and we weren’t really enjoying it. So we changed the way we were doing it to make it more fun and interesting. I got some A2 sheets of paper that I had titled with the name of each country. My mum got us some colourful Sharpie pens to write on the paper to make our notes bright and stand out. On the paper under each country heading, we wrote the cities/towns as subheadings for places/things we wanted to see there. What we also did was put how much travel will cost roughly in each country and also how long it will take to get from A to B without wasting too much time and money. We have £12,000 GBP to last us 6 months which gives us the monthly budget of £2,000 GBP. If we leave with some extra cash it can be put towards some more luxury items or places to visit or stay.
What we planned is not set in stone and we can change it as we go along. For example, say if we meet some other travellers they may say to us ‘have you seen…’ or ‘have you done…’.
This is our first ever travelling trip so we have been reading tons of other blogs and websites. Since we have been doing our planning it has actually made it seem more real, before this, it didn’t seem like it would ever happen, despite our flights being booked.
When Danny and I started talking about travelling, we were originally only going for 3-4 months. But after talking to people we decided to extend that to 6 months. We are both giving up our jobs so we want to make the most out of our travel experience!

We are going to do all our internal flights with AirAsia to get between countries, or we might even try the sleeper trains.
Danny booked us accommodation for the first few nights so we had somewhere to go as soon as we landed in Bangkok.
We used the following websites to find places to stay:
